IDB's Open-Source Software Repository: Code for Development

Implementation

Code for Development's repository serves as a pivotal resource for Latin American and Caribbean governments looking to harness the power of open-source technology for public good. With the objective of facilitating the accessibility and dissemination of open-source software for governments across the LAC region, the repository has curated more than 200 tools, developed by the IDB itself, governments, academia, and various startups. The repository works as a one-stop shop for public managers and contains tools that range from education to smart cities and digital public infrastructure.

IDB's Development of Open-Source Tools

Planning

Championing transparency, the IDB has open-sourced over 60 digital tools it owns with applications in smart cities, infrastructure, digital governance, health, education, social protection, and many other sectors. With a commitment to expand this repository annually, the initiative strives to democratize access to these tools, optimize public investment effects, foster cross-country and cross-sector collaboration, and ensure our AI tools are transparent and accountable. This effort underscores the IDB's dedication to shared knowledge and equitable resource distribution, enhancing public services and governance across the board.

IDB's Support for the Reuse of Open-Source Tools

Planning

Code for Development not only addresses inquiries from governments and academics but also collaborates with various IDB sectors to offer comprehensive technical support in curating and deploying open-source solutions, according to client demand. This collaborative effort extends from support for the implementation of specific tools to support for the development of 'open-source first' strategies, advising on the procurement of open-source technologies, and guiding the governance of public entities’ open-source portfolios. Our strategy includes fostering beneficial partnerships that underline the IDB's commitment to innovation and transparency in public administration.
