SDG9: Industry¸ Innovation and Infrastructure

Goal 8, Target 8.10 Rafiki offers financial service providers an open, free clearing layer without proprietary lock-in. By lowering both capital and operating expenses, it makes digital transaction accounts practical for even the smallest financial institutions. That new capacity lets community banks, credit unions, emerging fintechs, and micro-finance providers reach more people with safe, affordable financial services. As those accounts spread, the country moves closer to Target 8.10's call for universal access to regulated financial products. Goal 9, Target 9.c The Interledger open technology stack inside of Rafiki treats payments like packets transmitted through TCP/IP, so any participating network node can interoperate seamlessly. Because Rafiki is published under a permissive Apache 2.0 licence, local financial service providers face no gatekeepers or royalty costs when they modernize their payment rails. This open access lowers technical and economic barriers for new entrants and in theory drives down end-user prices. Goal 10, Target 10.c Cross-network interoperability removes the chains of intermediaries that normally push remittance fees above five percent. Rafiki uses the freely-licensed, open Interledger Protocol to discover the cheapest viable path between two accounting ledgers and settles balances directly, so service providers can offer transfers that approach or beat the three-percent target. When national switches embed Rafiki, those cost savings spread to every connected corridor. This technical foundation gives migrant workers and their families a clear path to lower-fee cross-border payments, matching the ambition of Target 10.c. Goal 17, Target 17 Rafiki's fully open source codebase, detailed documentation, and participatory community model encourage international cooperation in digital payments. Public agencies, private firms, civil society organizations, and academic researchers can study, localize, and improve the software without seeking permission. That open collaboration enlarges the global pool of knowledge and technology, exactly as Target 17.6 envisions.
