Creative Commons Joins the Digital Public Goods Alliance

The Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA) is excited to welcome Creative Commons (CC) as a new member of the alliance, joining us in our mission to leverage digital public goods to address the world’s most pressing challenges. Creative Common’s extensive experience in fostering open access and sharing through their legal tools and programs has been invaluable throughout the digital public goods ecosystem and to our collective efforts.

Through their membership, Creative Commons is committing to the following Roadmap activities:

  • Enable the Sharing and Use of DPGs: Through International Creative Commons Licenses and Public Domain Tools, CC makes it possible for everyone to freely and easily share creative and academic works. This initiative is crucial for the dissemination of DPGs, providing a standardised approach to copyright permissions, attribution, and the use of shared resources.
  • Open Up Knowledge and Culture: With projects like the Open Climate Campaign, CC is at the forefront of making climate research and educational resources widely accessible. This effort is key to accelerating progress towards solving the climate crisis and preserving global biodiversity. Additionally, their work on opening climate datasets and data models aims to foster further research and learning. Their open culture work is in response to the risk of irremediable loss to cultural heritage due to climate change. Open access to cultural heritage helps put scientific, historical, and socio-cultural knowledge into context and fosters the creation of new knowledge.
  • Provide Commons Training and Consulting: CC’s offerings, from CC Certificate courses to consulting services, are designed to enhance open practices and policies across governments and institutions. This education and support help build a stronger foundation for the creation and sharing of openly licensed DPGs.

Having CC as a member of the DPGA signifies a significant step forward in our shared vision for a world where open sharing of knowledge can effectively address global challenges. Together, we will work towards developing access to practical solutions, building capacity, and advocating for the open sharing of DPGs to benefit the public interest.
